Summer Fun School’s out, the sun is shining and you really want to get out and have some fun. Try one of these great local events. They’re all close to home so you won’t waste your time riding in the car.
Celebrate the l930s when the ship was the place to dance and dine. Enjoy music, hands on games, crafts and educational booths. Monterey Beer Festival The greatest assortment of beer ever assembled on the Central Coast. Sample varied styles from over 70 breweries. Light, dark, ales, bitters, cider, mead, Belgian, German, Japanese, every style 4th Annual Capitola Rod & Custom Classic Car Show Celebrate the days of yesteryear when rods and custom classic cars cruised to Capitola Village. Starts at the Esplanade. 15th Annual Arts, Crafts & Music Festival Free event features pottery, leatherwork, wood crafts, stained glass, dolls and much more. Entertainment throughout the day. Juneteenth Celebration Celebrate the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Free event offers great soul food for mind and body. Pacheco State Parks Family Kite Day Watch the sky dance with clever and imaginative kites—an afternoon of fun is in the air! Other activities include “Make Your Own Kite Free” table and free face painting, as well as pie eating contests, bubble gum blowing contests. $5 state park day use fee per car. Japanese Cultural Fair Celebrating its 23rd anniversary with traditional folk dance, tea ceremony, martial arts and much more. Free. Dia de San Juan Mission Fiesta Day A wonderful day with a BBQ, games, music and fun for the entire family celebrating the beautiful SJB Mission. San Benito County Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo This much-anticipated annual event brings out some of the finest horses, rodeo riders and performers in the area. 24th Monterey Bay Blues Festival Three stages of rockin’ blues and R&B presented by a festival dedicated to preserving this unique American art form. Woodies on the Wharf A chance to view more than 200 classic woodies. Great Train Robberies Hold onto your valuables, as each train is sure to be robbed at Bear Mountain. Trains at 11am, 12:30 & 2pm Bikes on the Bay: Soquel Vintage Motorcycle Show Come see vintage scooters and motorcycles from the last century. Red Bull US Grand Prix Rev up for summer with the country’s biggest motorcycle race, the MotoGP World Championship. 10K Firecracker Race & Kids 1K The most scenic, challenging course in SC, the race starts and finishes in Harvey West Park. Free fireworks show at the Spring Fair site. Food and game booths and contests will also be available for the evening. Spreckels 4th of July 10K run, a One-Mile Race for kids under 12, and a grand parade of children along 3rd Street. There will be live music, Fireman’s Muster, a craft fair and food booths. 4th of July Fireworks Celebration Enjoy a parade, live music, bounce houses for kids and delicious food. Admission $7. Gates open 3pm, Fireworks at 9:15pm Old-Fashioned Independence Day “World’s Shortest Parade” Pancake breakfast 7:30- l0 am, Parade at 10am. Party in the Park with live music, games, vendors. 11am- 4:30pm. Old–Fashioned Independence Day Watch the parade at noon, followed by flag raising, live old-time music, crafts, ice cream making and games, 11am- 4pm Free. Gilroy Fireworks Display A spectacular fireworks show, for free. The show begins at 9:15. Morgan Hill Independence Day The big weekend celebration starts on July 3 with a patriotic sing, live music and dancing. On the 4th start out with a pancake breakfast, Freedom 5K Run and 1 Mile walk, parade, car show and fireworks. Kiddie Parade & Fireworks The parade starts at the Veteran’s Memorial Park at 10am. Fireworks show is at the field adjacent to Marguerite Maze Middle School at dusk. Children of all ages are welcome to participate: walk, ride, roller skate, roller blade, etc. Spirit of Watsonville Celebrate Independence Day & Watsonville’s 159th Birthday. Pancake breakfast, downtown festival and parade. 2-5pm Hollister Motorcycle Rally Motorcycle events, Bike Show, Car Show, Vendors & more. California Rodeo Salinas The Rodeo is four days of raucous competition among top professional cowboys and cowgirls. Take in bareback bronc and bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, cattle cutting and barrel racing at its finest along with barbecues, parades and country western entertainment. Carmel Bach Festival This is the preeminent American Bach festival with over 130 events. Dozens of performances, lectures, demonstrations, recitals and special events that take place throughout the Monterey Peninsula area. 117th Merced County Fair Fun, games, rides, livestock, contests, and terrific entertainment! Kansas, Native Window, WAR, Sawyer Brown, The Beatles Project and Bucky Covington Full Moon Madness Take a moonlit guided walk through the Redwood Grove. Learn about stars and creatures of the night. 6:30 to 9pm, crafts for kids and refreshments. Shakespeare Santa Cruz 2009 Summer Festival A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Julius Caesar in the Festival Glen. Shipwrecked! An Entertainment on the Main Stage. Tues.- Sun: matinees and evening shows, main stage & festival grove at ucsc. California Mid-State Fair “Take a Ride on the Wild Side.” Big names in music will include Carrie Underwood, Journey & Heart, Kelly Clarkson, Tim McGraw, Kiss, Judas Priest, The Black Eyed Peas and much more. Gilroy Garlic Festival Feast on food laced with over two tons of fresh garlic, enjoy three stages of musical entertainment, shop for arts and crafts, view the great garlic cook-off and other celebrity cooking demonstrations. 36th Annual Wharf to Wharf Race 6-mile seaside run, from Santa Cruz Municipal wharf to the Capitola Wharf, limited to 15,000 runners. Moss Landing Antique Street Fair Browse through thousands of antiques and collectibles and enjoy a pancake breakfast. 7:30am. Free admission. Santa Clara County Fair This years theme is “The Summer Festival of Education.” Call for prices and times. Monterey Bay Strawberry Festival This multi-faceted celebration will serve up a menu of strawberry delights, non-stop entertainment, contests & more. Monterey County Celtic Week 40th Annual Monterey Scottish Games and Celtic Festival at Monterey County Toro Park. 12th Annual Turkish Festival A celebration of Turkish culture and arts, featuring live music and folk dances, dance workshops, belly dancing, crafts, delicious food, and activities for children. 46th Annual Antiques & Collectible Flea Market Eight blocks of vintage treasures for sale. 8am–5pm; free. Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music Hailed as the most distinguished festival of new symphonic music in the US. Northern California Blue Grass Festival This is a small festival with the amenities of a much larger event. A no-hassle, laid-back experience with no lines for anything. 2 stages, shaded audience area, flushy restrooms, hot water showers, quality sound, professional children’s activities. Great music. Shady Shakespeare Free Shakespeare in the Park, Thursdy thru Sunday at 7pm. The 2009 season includes As You Like It and Richard III. Cabrillo Music, Art, Food & Wine Festival Two days of outdoor world music and dancing with free art and music workshops for kids. Over 50 art and craft vendors. Free. Church St. in front of Civic Auditorium. 31st Annual International Musical Saw Festival Too much to tell you here about this Free event. Listen to old time fiddlers play blue grass, classical and country music on musical saws at workshops, open mic and jam sessions. Musicians perform on washboards and spoons, harmonicas and accordians, guitars, banjos and otherfolk instruments from around the world. Scotts Valley Art & Wine Festival Relax and enjoy the artwork of over l00 local artists accompanied by food, wine, music. Children’s activities. Admission is Free. Monterey County Fair Three stages of entertainment, carnival rides and games, pony rides, children's art and activities area, food from around the world, the Food and Wine Pavilion with enticing cooking demonstrations, and wine tasting. View the wonderful hand-made exhibits and experience our livestock shows up close. Street Festival & Sidewalk Sale Includes a car show featuring over 125 “cool rides,” downtown merchant sidewalk sale, local non-profit and business information booths, food booths sponsored by local restaurants and local non-profit organizations, free watermelon, 4 stages with live music and entertainment. And a jump house area for kids! Aloha Races and Polynesian Festival Novice paddlers discover the excitement of outrigger canoe. The festival features island music, dance, crafts and culture. Races 9am 57th Annual Capitola Begonia Festival A nautical parade, sand sculpture competition, a movie on the beach, and more. 13th Annual Monterey Bay ReggaeFest Reggae artists fill two stages over two days at the Monterey County Fairgrounds. Also great island cooking, arts and crafts, kids play area. Free Friday Night Bands on the Beach Two free live concerts every Friday night with stars of the 70s and 80s.
