Striking Achievements

Tom Kawano of Gilroy Bowl and Scotty’s Restaurant really wants the community to know that there is something special happening with kids and bowling in Gilroy. Gilroy Youth Bowling League teams are winning and placing in tournaments all over California and developing some young “star” bowlers as well.
In the 2007-2008 winter season, David Connolly (16) and Brandon Porria (13) took first places in their division at the NorCal BC Youth Doubles Championships. Jennifer Allemand (17) and Stephanie Gaddis (15), Andres Faria (7) and Stacey Gaddis (7) placed well in their respective divisions.
The ultimate achievement in bowling, that 300 “perfect game,” was rolled by two young aces this past season. Greg Seamons (17) and Michael Grzyb (18), veteran youth bowling leaguers, each rolled the absolute minimum 12 balls within a week of each other.
Youth athletics depends on coaches and volunteers. Rich Zurlo, program director and coach, along with Tammy Lewis, Wayne Allemand and Ozzie Osborne not only coach the mechanics of bowling, but the all important etiquette of the game as well.
This summer, 24 young bowlers from Out & About Country will travel to Mission Hills and Winnetka for the California USBC Youth Championship Tournament in July.
The winter league is coming to an end, but starts up again in September. Brandon Porria, president of the Youth League sends the word out that anyone who wants to join up should call (408) 842-5100. And it is not just for Gilroyans. Anyone within “striking“ range is welcome.
